Son, Ambulance has finished their follow-up to 2001's debut full-length, Euphemystic. The new record is entitled Key and will be released October 26th, 2004. Here’s how it works: First, a few adorable songs are written by one Joe Knapp. Next, a think-tank is formulated between an ensemble and Presto producer/engineer A.J. Mogis. The result: The songs are fully realized, any boundary between band and singer/songwriter is seamlessly blended, and a bricolage of youthfully euphoric pop songs and triumphant eight-minute blasts of majesty sure to infect all is formed. Viva Son, Ambulance!

SON VOLT BACK IN STUDIO: NEW LINE-UP ANNOUNCED, ANTHOLOGY IN THE WORKS: Jay Farrar’s popular rock band persona, Son Volt, is heading back into the studio to record their fourth full-length studio album—the first new release since 1998’s Wide Swing Tremolo (Warner Bros. Records). This time around, though, fans will be seeing (and hearing) a different collection of side musicians performing with Farrar. After several months of discussions and planning with the original Son Volt players—Dave Boquist, Jim Boquist and Mike Heidorn—Farrar was unable to reach acceptable business terms with the original line-up. With fifteen Son Volt songs written, studio time booked and engineer John Agnello on board, Farrar now plans to commence recording in St. Louis. Currently set to collaborate with Farrar on these sessions are Brad Rice (guitar--Tift Merritt, Ryan Adams), Andrew Duplantis (bass—Jon Dee Graham, Meat Puppets, Bob Mould), Eric Heywood (pedal steel—Son Volt, Calexico) and Dave Bryson (drums—Canyon). Fans will have access to these sessions through web cameras installed in the studio at www.jayfarrar.net/webcam. Also on the horizon is an anthology of material from the first three Warner Bros. albums—including rare or previously unreleased soundtrack cuts, live tracks, demos and unreleased studio recordings from that era. This anthology, the new studio album, plus a long-awaited tour are all slated for mid-2005.

Butch Walker has been added to the Avril Lavigne tour. Dates are below. Butch Walker's new album Letters is in stores now.

NOTES FROM NARM: Staring at a huge stack of folders and notes, plus trying to read my own scribbliongs. It's a ton of info, so here we go. Let me know if I got anything wrong or missed key info.

GREATEST DISCOVERY: Kudos to REDEYE DISTRIBUTION for releasing Conductor, the second CD by THE COMAS on YepRoc. This is a 2-disc set -- one, the CD in its entirety, and the second disc is a complete DVD movie set to the music. In any other presentation, playing the music by itself would elicit an "okay," but when presented with the video, largely a mix of live-action infused with CGI, the result is one big WOW. This release begs to be released in the DualDisc format, but for right now, I'm perfectly happy with keeping the CD in my car and the DVD cued up in my living room. You must go out and buy this today -- simply stunning. PS: The music is fantastic, especially appealing to fans of bands like Secret Machines and any of the myriad Failure spinoffs.

BEST FUN: Who would've thought that an indie could throw the best party at NARM? How about TWO indies topping the list? Congrats go to both MATADOR and the WELK MUSIC GROUP for two incredible events. Matador and ADA hosted a harbor cruise with a performance by Interpol, whose new CD, Antics, streets 9/28. Welk not only had their artists perform the national anthem (Hootie) and "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" (Chris Thile and Sam Bush), but they hosted a sick little gathering in MLB Commissioner Bud Selig's suite.

Big ups to Lou's Records for hosting the CIMS posse Friday night, M-Theory for the David J instore / AIMS party Sunday night (who played three Love & Rockets and one Bauhaus classic, all acoustic!), Atlantic for having John Butler perform acoustic for a couple dozen people crammed into their suite, Welk again for bringing Bob Schneider and Camper Van Beethoven to perform at Club NARM, and to NARM itself and the respective labels for bringing in Ben Harper & the Blind Boys of Alabama (Virgin), Marc Broussard (Island), Chick Corea (Concord), Brazilian Girls (Verve), John Davis (Rambler), Jason Mraz (Elektra), Bonnie McKee (Warner Bros), and Shinedown (Atlantic). I *know* I missed a few names, so don't kick my ass too hard -- also, thanks to Redeye for having the Supersuckers perform.

NEW TECHNOLOGIES: NARM introduced FOUR new in-house burning solutions for stores that want on-demand production. MICS, TOUCHSTAND, VMS, and MIX & BURN all did dog & pony shows for the retailers to decide what solution they would like to use to meet their customers' needs. In additionto the kiosks, this year's event marked the introduction of the DUAL DISC, and CD / DVD hybrid that plays CDs on one side, DVDs on the other -- all of which plays on 99% of all current devices! Very cool way to enhance content and keep consumers attached to the disc, although I had to skip out before security & price points were discussed. Also, major props to Louis and the Hopeless gang for launching downloadpunk.com, an all-punk site for kids to download WMA & MP3s for $.69, $.79, and $.89 apiece. And let's all welcome the forward-thinking iTunes staff for joining NARM -- very smart move. PS: Look for a portable device from Sirius in the next 60 days! Although it's not totally Walkman-style portable, at least you can take it from place to place -- a very positive step forward, and another nail in the coffin of terrestrial radio (which, to borrow a Southern colloquialism, is about as useful as tits on a boy dog).

In other Sanctuary news, look for the new NANCY SINATRA CD (9/28) to feature guests Morrissey, Bono and The Edge, Peter Yorn, Steve Van Zandt, Doves, Calexico, Jon Spencer, Jarvis Cocker (Pulp), and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) -- daaamn! Where's Lee Hazlewood?

SxSW NAME DROPPIN' (a.k.a. "License Their Music Before You Can't Afford 'Em"): Pardon me while I pull some Larry King b.s. and just gush over some great music ...What an amazing festival, really makes you feel good about the state of new music -- NELLIE McKAY and JAMIE CULLUM both blew my mind. Nellie's CD is bound to be on every critics' year-end list, and UK piano impresario Jamie Cullum tore that shit up right. MARC BROUSSARD has got some serious soul for a whiteboy -- NAILED it in front of L A Reid ... one of these days I'll catch a show by JONATHAN RICE -- his Warner debut will be coming later in the year, and girls go apeshit over this kid. (INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY and THE VON BONDIES both laid waste to the stubb's outdoor stage for the Spin party, and Waylon's kid MASON JENNINGS is more Waylon than Waylon ever was ... Great to see BMG return with their Bar-B-Acoustic (in conjunction with New Times). Performances by allstars CHARLIE MARS, MICHAEL TOLCHER, TOOTS & THE MAYTALS, COOPER TEMPLE CLAUSE, and CITIZEN COPE showed some great talent ... COHEED AND CAMBRIA's La Zona Rosa gig was so packed that I missed the first ten minutes of their show at the AP party, and that's a good sign of a growing band...kick me in the ass for missing DENALI, HIGH ON FIRE, MISSION OF BURMA, BAD WIZARD, MAXEEN, OLD CROW MEDICINE SHOW, ALEXI MURDOCH, and RIGHTEOUS BABE ALLSTARS...wished I had caught SNOW PATROL too, but their oversold LA shows told me that not only were they good, but that they also have a good sixed following before their record has even hit the States... and finally, word has it SUICIDE GIRLS might wanna work on their casting if they think they're gonna take the gothic striptease on the road. Ah well .. apologies to anybody I missed, I'm lucky to recall half this given the entire whirlwind blur the festival was... (3/23)
